Which Style of Martial Arts Training is Right for You?

Love the $7 black belt comment to hold up your pants!! So true. I love TKD!

Joyce- thanks for the comment! It’s sad to see people get a black belt in a year, it’s crazy!!

    Master Scott,

I couldn’t agree more! At the one year point I was an intermediate dark green belt….and that was with many extra hours in the dojang preparing for our State tournament. Six months after that I just reached my first advanced belt and it will take me another year and a half to reach first Dan. Three years total and that’s with a lot of extra time on my behalf.

Unfortunately some schools see TKD as a cash cow. Get them in and get them out…selling “Black Belt packages” etc…

Regardless of your background or athletic ability NO ONE truly becomes a black belt in a year. It’s an insult to the art to claim you have black belt abilities in 12 short months.

What are the %2 of martial arts you don’t agree with or don’t think are good? ;) By the way, very solid advise all around.

    Bill,

I agree, it’s an insult to think you could earn a black belt in a year! Unfortunately there are a lot of schools out there who are just in it for the money, it’s too bad. Well on the positive side, we can only control ourselves, and if enough of us follow the right path the arts will outlast us all!

    J.-

Great question! The 2% of martial arts that I don’t agree with include the guys who train for a short time and open “Joe’s Karate” and claim to be a 9th dan! I guess it would be safe to say I don’t “dislike” a particular style; however, the “instructor” with little to no experience opening a school is the one I have a problem with! Thanks for being a part of our community J!!!

    Master Scott,

You mean I can’t just buy a black belt off the internet and embroider 9 yellow stripes on it?!? My dreams are shattered!! LOL

On a serious note – at brown belt – I just NOW feel confident enough in my knowledge and skill level to teach raw beginners. (white and yellow belts) Good solid stances, kicking / punching techniques all leading to a solid understanding of Hyung and sparring principals take YEARS to develop! I am constantly having my Master tweak my stances and Forms. People like the owner of “Joe’s Karate” you speak of cheat not only their students but cheat THEMSELVES.

You are correct. We can only control ourselves. I have seen enough people “belt rank” just to say they are black belts only to fall far short of the mark. The questions they have to ask THEMSELVES are “What does that rank really mean?” and “Do I really have a high enough skill level to protect myself if need be?” My guess is no and by teaching others they perpetuate the lie.

Keep up the good work sir!!

    Bill,

I could probably sell embroidered 9th degree black belts and move a lot of them! lol I think the Karma from that move would be bad : ) Have a great day Bill and thanks for all of the feedback.
