In this video I will discuss a few techniques to help improve your martial arts breathing. This is one aspect of the martial arts that usually takes years to master but it can be done. One of the keys is to remember to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Make sure you control your breathing before it controls you. It’s certainly easier said than done but don’t give up, it’s critical to becoming a better fighter and lasting into the late rounds. Good luck and train hard!

Great video Master Scott! I have never heard of the double breathing technique so I’ll definitely try that. I’ve got mild exercise induced asthma so relaxation is VERY important for me (although not always easily obtained! LOL)
One more tip than may help people is to “belly breathe”. Infants naturally do this and somehow over time we “learn” to breathe expanding our chest…which is WRONG. The belly should expand when breathing in and the chest stay relatively still. This way you fill your lungs like a bottle…from the bottom up. To practice this you can lay flat on the floor with a book on your belly and watch it rise as you breathe in and fall as you breathe out. This takes a LOT of practice to unlearn the shallow breathing we have learned.
Thanks again Master Scott!

Great advice!
I like to implement those same breathing techniques when I run! It’s a great way to get used to it and as it will come more naturally, you will focus less on that while you are sparring or in the ring.

As someone whose had their nose broken several times, deviated septum, suffered with allergies, sinus infections, etc., all nose breathing would ever do for me was send me into anoxyia. The diaphramatic breathing I was taught in Shotokan Karate, (in Yoga it’s called “belly breathing”) worked well for me in sparring, not only because I could breathe, but because it trained me to stay loose and relaxed, lowered my hara (center of gravity), increasing the power of my strikes, and didn’t use the energy of upper chest breathing which raises and lowers the weight of the shoulder girdle and rib cage.
Korean boxers I met did belly breathing with a partner standing on their stomach and I have doen this for years. I found most persons who conditioned in this way were able to take full force thrust kicks to the abdomen that would luanch them across the room and yet would not knock the wind out of them.
Interestingly enough, where you breathe seems to change where you can kick with most power. Breathing into the lower abdomen roots you to the ground and powers up your low kicks, lick the puin-te (cross stomp) and breathing into the upper chest helps you launch aerial techniques.

Ron,
I love your perspective since it comes from experience! Thanks for the detailed explanation, this will help many students. I have used “belly breathing” in Yoga for years, it works. Great explanation on putting it into action.

You are so right! It is so natural when sparring to revert to breathing in through the mouth…seems easier at the time but really works against you.
