Karate Online Inside Out Axe Kick

In this video I will teach you how to do the Inside out axe kick. This is a great kick to use in Taekwondo tournaments where punching in the face is not allowed. This kick will also help you increase your flexibility by slowly stretching your hamstrings over time. I don’t recommend that you use this kick in MMA or Kickboxing style matches, it leaves you open to someone with a quick jab. Practice this technique on a regular basis and make sure you add height and speed as you become your comfortable and flexible. Let me know what you think about the axe kick with a comment below!!

Oh yes, I almost forgot! Many schools have other names for this kick, does yours call it something different??

    Master Scott,

It’s a conundrum! I do not use the ax when I spar because it requires a great degree of hamstring flexibility yet the kick DEVELOPS that flexibility. lol

We call it the Ax or Ji Cho Chagi.

Interesting how tournaments vary. You mention striking the face with the kick where as in the tournaments here we are taught to come down on the top of the head. Generally face strikes in our tournaments are warnings…one drawing blood can be a disqualification.

…not that I can throw that kick on anyone taller than 5’5″ anyway…LOL For now I’m front, side, back, round until be flexibility improves. I’m thinking about getting strung up in a tree like Jean Claude Van Damme did to get his flexibility in the movies…LOL

    Bill,

Yes this kick will certainly help increase your flexibility. In most TKD Tournaments is “knockout” for Black Belts age 17-32 yrs old. Your correct, its usually safety rules for colored belts and juniors. Good luck with the Van Damme method :)

ohh yaa i love the axe and i lead with it and counter there running from it with the spinning back kick..i learned a variation where you throw a front kick to above there head to drop the axe kick and at the same time your sliding forward to cover the gap .advanced stuff you have to watch out that you dont pull your support leg out from under you .

    Mike,

I agree, I like to chase them down with either a turning back kick or a step in side kick. Thanks for the input!!
