Karate Combat for Self Defense

There are many different techniques in Karate and the martial arts; however, some are better for street combat than others. Now, when I say Karate I will generalize and actually show you a few techniques from a couple different styles. When it comes to devastating techniques I believe they have to do two things, be quick, and cause damage.

Lets first talk about the speed of a strike. It is crucial that when your defending yourself that you strike quickly. When it comes to a quick upper body technique it’s really hard to beat the speed of a jab. The target area for this technique is the nose. A fast jab won’t usually cause a lot of damage (until you get good with it) but it is great for setting up other techniques.

The next option is a roundhouse kick delivered to the knee. This kick can be done lightning fast and certainly cause damage. The second kick that is excellent for street combat is the front snap kick to the groin. If you are wearing a steel tow or a pointy dress shoe then kick toes up. If you are wearing a tennis shoe or dress shoe I suggest you point your toes down and hit with the top of the foot. Another key to using kicks in self defense is to hit low.

Now let’s talk about causing damage to an attacker. It doesn’t do you much good if your lighting fast and hit an area of the body that doesn’t cause much pain. Now, for professional martial artist, they have developed enough power that they usually cause damage no matter what they hit. For the average person your odds of protecting yourself go up a lot if you strike a vital area. You want to cause enough damage to get away and survive the situation.

I suggest you practice these techniques over and over until they become fast and powerful. If you want these techniques to be second nature you should practice them about 5-10,000 times (yes that is thousands, no misprint).

Finally, once you feel comfortable with these three combat techniques try combining them into a flurry of speed and power. Try to throw the jab, then crush the knee with a roundhouse. After that reverse it, throw a kick and then follow up with a punch. Don’t forget, always strike through your target for maximum damage, don’t just strike and pull back. Good luck with your training and practice often!
