In this video I talk about Martial Arts Training at Home. I get a lot of emails on this topic and I want to explain my feelings once and for all! I get a lot of emails from people who think that training at home isn’t real or it’s impossible. Online training is considered “FAKE” by many and it’s time you hear my thoughts!!

[..YouTube..] @aboodal3las if you think he’s doing it wrong then dont tell him he’s doing it wrong. instead just tell him that youve also seen it done another way and that the other way is the only way youve ever seen it done and let him explain why he does it the way he does it. some people know the standard way to do tecniques but instead of doing it the standard way they put their own personal touch on it.

I have been involved in Martial Arts for 20+ years. I have a 3rd Dan certified by the World Tae Kwon Do Federation. When I moved and started looking for a school, I found that many were their own “certifying agency”. My question is: How important is it for a school or instructor to be certified by a national or international organization. Some of these instructors received their training in a certified school but chose not to certify their school. What is your opinion?

I think online training is a great supplement to training on ones own or from a dojang, dojo or kwoon.

Couldn’t agree with you more! Also, some people learn better visually, and some people do better with a hands on method. The more tools available, the more everyone benefits.

[..YouTube..] @aboodal3las Great advice from below, to question shows that you really want to learn, but how you approach it makes all of the difference! Just let him know you have seen it done another way and get his explanation, just as the comment below suggests. Good Luck!!

John,
You bring up a very good question! I am certified under the WTF and so is my school; however, I am not sure of the benefits versus the cost. I know of instructors who charge $5000-$10,000 to sign off on a higher ranking Dan Certificate and it’s wrong! The politics involved behind the scenes in many of these organizations is insane. This is one of the biggest reasons many instructors have decided to leave these organizations. I think that if the instructor runs a solid program and he is teaching all of the benefits of the martial arts then belonging to a “certifying agency” is less important. Here is the funny part, your instructor trains you, gives you the tools, confidence, etc. What is the association doing for you, do you even know the person who signs your certificate? Probably not. With all that said, I belong to an association at the moment; however, the benefits are waning fast!

I do some at home training for the exact reasons you mentioned; I can’t get to the dojo because of my schedule as well as that of my family. I found my ability to train outside of my home decrease significanly after I attained my first dan in Shuri-Ryu. As such, I look to legitimate websites, like your own, to help keep me “fresh.’ Thanks for doing what you do.

[..YouTube..] I totally agree. In my opinion there are three levels of Martial Artist. 1. Fighters who learn to fight. 2. Scholars who enjoy the knowledge and can use the basics for self-defense. 3. Professional Coaches who study and train others how to fight. I am a number 2 and I hope I never have to use it.

Hi Master Scott ! I really appreciate what you are doing here. I ultimately agree that you give stellar advise on all of these topics on this web site. I believe it is very beneficial to people who want to know the martial arts for self defence , fitness or just the love of the art , but can not afford it. I also think it’s beneficial for the people who are currently attending classes , such as reviewing a technique learned in class , or learning a technique here and asking help from their instructors with it. It’s an all around , very informative site that you have here! I currently study TKD and hold a red belt in that art. My instructor is a 7th degree master of TKD , and also my best friend of 39 years. Thank you for sharing your acurate information with us on the martial arts.
Sincerely,
Andrew E.
